According to the Active Leisure Trends 2018 report from ukactive and the DataHub, indoor cycling has occurred to be the most popular group class in the UK, accounting 13 per cent of all exercise classes.
The report studied data from three million customers and 150 million individual visits across 396 leisure centres over the past three years, and revealed that there are more women than men attending group sessions. There are only 14 per cent of men visiting fitness clubs for the exercise classes, while almost 40 per cent of women prefer exercise in groups. Moreover, women account 74 per cent of group class participants.
Swimming has been identified as the most popular group workout among elderly population with 39 per cent of people aged 75 and over choosing it. In comparison, just 8 per cent of those aged 16 to 24 prefer swimming to other classes.
ukactive CEO Steven Ward concluded: "Armed with this knowledge, operators are better able to tailor their fitness offerings to meet the wants and needs of their customers, which can only help support our goal to get more people, more active, more often."
